McCrae House

Search Guelph Ontario

McCrae House is located in a charming limestone cottage near the banks of the Speed River in a section of Guelph known as Brooklyn. Built in 1858 and expanded some ten years later, the house was the first home of David and Janet McCrae, the parents of John McCrae, after their marriage in 1870. Two room settings depict the daily life of a young middle-class Guelph family of this time period. A permanent exhibition gallery tells the story of John McCrae. The house is surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens and a memorial park. Many varieties of poppy can be found there. The McCrae family was active in the social, political, military, agricultural, industrial and cultural activities of Guelph since the mid 19th century.
