After Newport, there will be more people, and probably less birds at beach access sites. Come early and on weekdays, not during summer, for the best birding possibilities.
While birding, look for grey whales, especially from bluffs and headlands like Cape Foulweather. Other places to visit include Rocks End State Park, Devil's Lake State Park and the D River.
