Umpqua Riverfront Revitalization and the Umpqua Lighthouse Loop. |
A major attraction in the area is the Umpqua Discovery Center. There is also a boardwalk along the waterfront, interpretive exhibits and great places to watch the birds in the river. For the Winchester Lighthouse Loop, turn off Highway 101 at Wincester Bay onto Salmon Harbor Drive. Look for pelicans in summer along the jetty. In the bay look for common loons, grebes, mergasers, buffleheads, cormorants, and gulls. Follow the road to the Umpqua River Whale Watching Station. It is a good place to watch for pelagic birds as well as whales. The Station is located near Umpqua Lighthouse State Park.
