Founded by a local landowner, Brightwood recieved its name for the view of the shinning sun on the cottonwood in the spring. Brightwood is an unincorporated tourist-oriented community within the Mt. Hood corridor off U.S. 26.As part of its history the "Barlow Road" is as old as the Oregon Trail. It runs beside a section of the Sandy Creek and through the "back yard" of the city providing a breath taking veiw of the mountains. Brightwood is home to many of the local ski and snowboarding opportunities in the area. It provides an area that most people will stop to make sure that they have all the gear needed before making the trip into the wilderness.
