Brown Trout

(Salmo trutta)

Brown trout average a length of 16 inches, generally weighing only a few pounds. In streams the coloring is a light brown with silvery sides and pronounced black spots on the back. In large lakes, the overall coloration is silvery. Other common names for brown trout include: German brown, Loch Leven trout and brownie.

Brown trout spawn in late autumn to early winter in shallow, gravelly waters. Female browns dig a redd (shallow depression) where she lays about 2000 eggs. This species is carnivorous, typically feeding on terrestrial and aquatic insects, worms, crayfish and fish.

Brown trout prefer water temperatures between 55 degrees and 65 F and are typically found near shore waters. This wary fish can be taken more readily in early morning and twilight hours.

The brown trout is native to Europe and western Asia and was introduced into North America in 1883.
