Located a few miles from
Coquille and accessible by the
Growing Forest Driving Tour, the Doerner fir is now recognized as the largest Douglas fir on earth. Discovered about 13 years ago, the tree stands 329 feet tall, taller than a 30-story building, and estimated at 400 to 600 years old. It contains enough wood to build five homes and weighs more than a fully loaded 747 or two fully grown blue whales.
Originally called the Brummit Fir, the name was recently changed to honor Ray Doerner, then the chief executive of the Association of O&C Counties.
