In 1987, the Oregon Legislature passed the Oregon Endangered Species Act, which provides for the protection of vulnerable species of plants and animals on state-owned and managed lands. The Oregon Dept of Fish & Wildlife is the lead agency for the conservation of rare wildlife and fish, and the Oregon Department of Agriculture has a similar role for plants.

Oregon's endangered species include the coho salmon, brown pelican, gray wolf, and a variety of plant life.
