Fort Rock is actually an ancient volcanic crater. A half mile hiking trail can be found inside the crater.

Located off OR 31, 2 miles northwest of the town of Fort Rock. Historians believe an Indian population lived here about 10,000 years ago.

Nearby Fort Rock Cave is the site of an archaeological discovery of several sagebrush sandals, believed to be the oldest ever discovered in Oregon. Fort Rock Cave is a National Heritage Site, and offers state park guided tours.
