Gilchrist is located in
Klamath County, southwest of
Bend, between
La Pine and
Crescent along
Highway 97. This community is also situated within the
Deschutes National Forest, southeast of Wickiup Reservoir, Davis Lake,
Odell Lake and Summit Lake.
The community of Gilchrist was developed by the Gilchrist Timber Company in 1938, and the post office was established on November 14 of that same year. Frank W. Gilchrist of Saginaw, Michigan started the family lumber business shortly after the Civil War.
