Largemouth Bass
|
|---|
(Micropterus salmoides ) |
The largemouth bass is usually dark green on the back becoming lighter on the sides. There is usually a dark streak or band along the sides. The color of the eye is usually gold, lacking the red found in the eye of the smallmouth. Common names include green trout, green bass and slough bass. The largemouth's upper jaw extends beyond the hind margin of the eye.Largemouth bass will spawn from early May through June when water temperatures reach 60 to 70 degrees. The males construct the nests or redds, digging shallow depressions in sand or gravel. Here the females will deposit their eggs on submerged rootlets, logs, or other submerged vegetation. Later, the female is driven from the nest area after spawning and the male assumes the duties of caring for the eggs and young.
