Search Visit Oregon

One of the dams on the Columbia River, McNary Dam produces 8.7 billion KWH of hydroelectric power annually. Construction was by the U.S. Corps of Engineers and was begun in 1947. The immense structure includes a spillway 1310 feet in length and a 1422-ft powerhouse. It impounds a lake that extends 70 miles upstream from Umatilla to Richland WA. At several locations around McNary Lock and Dam, information is available for the visitor. The visitor center, which is open throughout the summer, is the starting point for guided tours. Exhibits present the Corps' story and information on the operation of this hydroelectric dam and its related facilities.

Situated throughout the McNary Project are many day use and camping facilities. Below the dam are McNary Wildlife Nature Area and two picnic areas. Above the dam, McNary Beach Park's picnic area overlooks a large swim beach, while Hat Rock Scenic Corridor leads to Hat Rock State Park.
