At this site, the Molalla Indians, a band within the Umpqua tribe, had a major fishery for salmon and steelhead. The North Umpqua River has gouged out a narrow quarter-mile canyon with steep walls and a deep channel alternating with rapids. The narrows is still a popular spot for salmon and steelhead fishermen.
