Netarts is almost due west of the city of Tillamook in western Tillamook County. Although on the water, it is protected from the ocean by the long Netarts Spit. Just south is Cape Lookout State Park.
The earliest Tillamook Indian settlement for the county was here in Netarts. Archeologists believed these first natives to have originated in the early 1400's. The name "Ne ta at" meant "near the water." The first white settlement of Netarts Bay was in 1863.
