Portland is divided by the
Willamette River, running roughly north-south through the city, and by Burnside Street. Streets north of Burnside are "North" and those south are "South." Streets east and west of the river are "East" and "West," respectively. Burnside itself is the only street that is simply "East" or "West," while some streets on the peninsula between the
Willamette River and the
Columbia River are simply "North." All others are designated SE, SW, NE or NW.
