As
Portland grew, the more prosperous of its citizens tended to move their residences up into the hills to the west of downtown. The lower reaches still have some mansions mixed, mostly converted to other uses, in with apartments and commercial development, but the higher elevations still contain homes both new and old to house the city's elite. Some of the city's most notable points of interest are also found here, including the
International Rose Test Gardens, the
Japanese Garden,
Oregon Zoo and
World Forestry Center.
