Pistol River State Park is an excellent birding spot and is also a favorite with ocean windsurfers, who gather here for some of the best conditions on the south coast. The state park here has a day-use picnic area but no other facilities. The river has changed course, cutting the park off from ready beach access, but there are some nice areas for the energetic hiker. There is also an historical marker next to Highway 101 a little north, commemorating the Battle of Pistol River, fought during the Rogue River Indian War. Quality experiences await visitors to more than 200 state parks managed for the public by the Oregon State Parks.
