Keiko's Current Condition

June 5, 1997

Keiko has gained more than a ton, weighing in at 9,620 lbs. for a total weight gain of 1,900 since his arrival on January 7, 1996 from Mexico City.

Keiko originally measured in at 21 feet in length, he now has grown 8 more inches and added three feet in girth.

Dr. Lanny Cornell, veterinarian for the Free Willy Keiko Foundation says "We're very pleased at his progress, he was a ton underweight just 18 months ago, and he now looks and acts like a completely different animal."

Dr. Cornell also removed pieces of a tooth that was damaged during Keiko's stay in Mexico City. Its loss will not effect his ability to hunt successfully.

The Free Willy Keiko Foundation has also begun to introduce Keiko to live herring, on June 5, 1997 40 herring were placed in the 2 million gallon tank. Keiko showed keen interest in the fish, following the small school through the water without eating them. Live fish will now be introduced into his pool weekly.
