Orca Whale Hunting Methods

Search Visit Oregon

Sometimes a pod of killer whales will work together to encircle and herd fish into a small area for easy feeding. Those that eat animals such as seals and penguins have their own methods.

  • Surfacing under ice floes to tip the ice and throw their prey into the water
  • using their tail flukes to send a wall of water over an ice floe and wash prey into the water
  • chasing seals and sea lions and hitting them with their tails, sometimes for more than an hour
  • attacking baleen whales and biting off chunks of flesh or blubber, or grasping the prey by the flukes or flippers to slow its escape.
