Steens Mountain

Steens Mountain, Oregon (Geology) image

The mountain is located 60 miles SE of Burns. In summer, you can drive to the top of this 9,670-foot fault block mountain to look over the Alvord Desert more than 5,000 feet below.

Other unusual geologic features in the area include Diamond Craters, which has an extraordinary collection of volcanic features, and glaciated Kiger Gorge on Steens Mountain.

For campers, BLM has Page Springs, a campground on the Blitzen River. Campsites are also available on the mountain at Fish Lake and Jackman Park. For more information, contact the Burns District Bureau of Land Management.
