Sumpter is located in Baker County, between Baker City and Prairie City along Hwy 7 , then north onto Sumpter Hwy near the Powder River. The town was founded in the 1860's and has a long connection with the gold mining industry. The name was derived from Fort Sumter, famous for its role in the start of the Civil War. However, the name was misspelled.
