Sunriver is a privately planned residential community located 18 miles south of Bend
along Highway 97
, at the base of the Cascade Mountains
. This community is also situated along the banks of the beautiful Deschutes River
, within the Deschutes National Forest
and just west of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument
. Sunriver has been carefully developed into clusters of small villages, each with their own flavor and convenience.
The city of Sunriver was created in 1965 as the joint inspiration of a developer and an Oregon attorney. The first home site was sold in 1968. This location was originally the former World War II Camp Abbott.
Popular Outdoor Activities include: Bicycling (30 miles of paved paths), Canoe - Kayak - Raft, golf, skiing Mount Bachelor, fly fishing, tennis (31 courts), Ice Skating/Miniature Golf, swimming (Sunriver offers two giant swimming pools) and hiking.
