On November 20, 1882, a rail line was built through what is now Troutdale and on east through the
Columbia River Gorge Nat'l Scenic Area. Troutdale's founder, Capt. John Harlow, asked railroad builders to establish a depot at his town site. After delicate negotiations bordering on extortion, the railroad agreed.
The original depot burned in 1907. The current structure was built to replace it the same year. Indoor restrooms were later added and a trackside bay altered. Otherwise, the building is much the same aswhen it was new. The station agent's office contains railroad articles donated by local residents.
The depot was donated to Troutdale by the Union Pacific in 1976 and was moved from its original location about two blocks.
A variety of adventures with Trains await the railroad enthusiast in Oregon.
