Carlisle, settled in 1751 by Scottish immigrants, is located in Cumberland County, of which it is the county seat. The community is known for its tree lined streets, summer festivals, historic homes, and more. In 1836, Carlisle's school system was the first in the state to provide public education.
Carlisle Barracks, today the home of the U.S. Army War College, is the oldest Army Post in the country, built in 1798. Numerous city parks offer year-round sports and recreation for visitors and residents alike.
Carlisle is located northwest of York between Harrisburg and Chambersburg along Highway 11 near the Susquehanna River. Carlisle is part of the Harrisburg-Lebanon-Carlisle metro area.
