This museum is on the site where Edwin L. Drake drilled the world's first oil well in 1859 and launched the modern petroleum industry. The replica of Edwin Drake's engine house and oil derrick provides visitors with a glimpse of how the oil industr y began in Pennsylvania in 1859. Reproductions of Drake's steam engine and wood-fired boiler operate May through October, showing how oil was pumped from the 69 1/2 foot deep well. Orientation videos are shown in the museum's mini-theater, and also there are over 80 exhibits telling the story of the early oil industry. Outdoor exhibits of oilfield machinery in our 219-acre park setting along Oil Creek include a working central power lease with rodlines and pumping jacks, a 100 yr. old pumping station, and an early steel drilling rig.
