In 1930, construction workers on the new William Penn Highway triggered an explosion, and the hillside collapsed -- exposing a grand cavern decorated with stalactites and stalagmites. Mr. Stewart, the farmer who owned the hillside, decided to hire some of the highway workers to open the cave as a commercial attraction. As sand and clay were removed, they discovered the largest variety of formations ever found in a Pennsylvania cave. Visitors can tour the caves with guides who offer informative narration during 1 hour tours.
