In 1909 Ione and Harry Byron embarked upon a dream-the creation of a magnificent private estate. The Byron's unlimited wealth, impeccable taste, and vision of a life of casual elegence led, two years later, to the completion of Prospect, a stately 20,000-square-foot Georgian mansion on 6.5 acres of terraced lawn. The brick mansion features a slate roof, Indiania limestone sills, copper spouting, decorative tile, oak flooring, double-curving wrought iron balustrades, scagliola columns, and mahogany and chestnut paneling. The 230-year-old historic village of Mercersburg is the birthplace of President James Buchanan and the home of the Mercersburg Academy.
