During the 18th century, the city of Montreal was surrounded by stone fortifications. In the early 19th century, the fortifications were demolished, but the compressed pattern of streets within the district remained. During the latter part of the 19th century, this was the commercial and financial center of the city, but the new downtown developed outside of Vieux Montreal.
During the preparations for Expo 67, the old part of the city was revived. Today, it is a vibrant mix of art, shopping, entertainment, and fascinating architecture.
