Fishing in Puerto Rico

Search Visit Puerto Rico

Freshwater fishing has existed in Puerto Rico's 12 man-made lakes for years, but the sport itself has become popular only within the past decade.

Some 14 clubs fish the dozen lakes, which were constructed in the 1930s as a source of drinking water and irrigation. Bass, both large-mouth and peacock, are local favorites with at least another seven other native speciaes as well. The lakes are stocked with more than 2,000 baby fish from the Mariaco Fish Hatchery. Plastic worms are the most popular choice of bait among the locals.
