The continent if Puerto Rico has its own special island, fondly called `la isla nena` (the little girl island). Vieques Island was especially loved by a Spanish governor of Puerto Rico, Count Mirasol, who convinced the Spanish government to build a defensive fortress there in the 1840s. Today, the carefully restored Forte Conde de Mirasol houses a museum of art and history that celebrates the fascinating story of the unique island of Vieques.

History buffs will enjoy the exhibits which bring together a microcosim of the myraid forces that affected Vieques. There are Indian relics, displays of the Spanish conquest, and flags of the Danes, British and French who intervened in its history. The French sugarcane planters and their African slaves are portrayed, and the island even boasts a bust of Simon Bolivar, the result of a visit from the Great Liberator.
