San German is Puerto Rico's second oldest town, an hour from
Ponce and 2 hours from
San Juan. Founded in 1512, San German was destroyed by the French in 1528. Rebuilt in 1570, it was named for Germain de Foix, the second wife of King Ferdinand of Spain. The city has 249 historical treasures all within walking distance, including the Gate of Heaven, registered as a National Historic Place.
