Puerto Rico has 272 miles of sandy beaches, ranging from the lively shoreline of the resort areas to deserted coves.
Waters along the north coast tend to be rougher than the south. Besides the privately maintained hotel beaches, Puerto Rico has some fantastic public beaches, which offer changing facilities, parking food and drink, and life guard supervision. Some also offer camping and cabin rental, as well as water sports equipment. These beaches are closed on Mondays, election days, and Good Fridays. Many tourists enjoy lounging by the splendid hotel pools in San Juan, Mayaguez and Ponce. The luxury hotels often offer a choice, including special children's pools.
