The building that The Gatehouse is housed in was not originally built as a restaurant. It was a part of complicated equipment designed to operate a bridge that went across the Seakonk river. This bridge was so important, that a man lived in the Restaurant to maintain it.

For over a hundred years this is how it was, until in 1970 when a newer, more sophisticated bridge was built farther upstream. The building fell into disrepair.

In 1993 the building and premises were purchased and totally renovated, and it has become a ***** restaurant. Over the years it has won many accolades, such as "Best of Rhode Island in Service, Restaurant Bar, and Romantic Dining."
