Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge |
Established in 1932, Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge offers 64,229 acres for visitors to explore, 28,000 of which are preserved with the National Wilderness Preservation System. The refuge is situated in the northeast Charleston County. The refuge headquarters is located on seven acres of permitted lands within the Francis Marion National Forest.
The Refuge Office and Visitor Center are located 20 miles north of Charleston, South Carolina on United States Highway 17. Refuge lands are located 20 miles north of Charleston and are accessible by boat only.
The refuge is a barrier island and salt marsh habitat extending for 20 miles along the Atlantic Coast. Concentrations of waterfowl, shore birds, wading birds, and raptors with over 337 species of birds found on the refuge. The refuges is the home of the largest nesting population of loggerhead sea turtles outside the State of Florida. The refuge plays an integral role in recovery of endangered red wolf.
