Hopeland Gardens are located in downtown Aiken. The city once was famous as a healthful resort for wealthy Northerners who built "cottages," or magnificent summer homes. Hopeland Gardens contains beautiful traditional gardens, the Hall of Fame in the former stables, a wetlands garden, an open-air stage, and a fountain at the former foundation of the house. The Hopeland Gardens are fourteen filled acres with Camellias that bloom in the late winter, followed by azaleas, wisteria, dogwood, crepe myrtle, and magnolias. Lilies and roses bloom here in the fall season. A touch-and-scent trail, with plaques in Braille, lead nature-lovers to new discoveries. Concerts and plays are given on Monday evenings during the summer.
