Kalmia Gardens |
The geological history of Kalmia Gardens is a fascinating one of ancient deposits of sands and clays, which now comprise the bedrock ground of the gardens. The geology of Kalmia Gardens is quite unique for this area of the state, and the 60-foot drop in elevation from the house to the creek is the essence of the Gardens. If it were not for this terrain, there would not be the diversity of plant and animal life that goes with it.
The gardens include an almost complete sampling of the state's vastly varying terrain. Flora & fauna are contained in this extraordinary 30-acre arboretum maintained by Coker College. The gardens are a microcosm of the natural state from mountains to the sea.
The gardens are open daily and are free to the public.
