From the earliest settlement until the first decade of the l900's, rice dominated life in Georgetown County. In the 1840's the Georgetown, S.C. region produced almost half the rice grown in the United States.

A changing exhibit gallery provides visitors an interesting and topical exhibit of art and history on a revolving basis. Lafayette Park surrounds the Rice Museum building and is a refreshing urban greenspace on the banks of the Sampit River.

The Rice Museum is located in the Old Market Building, the first Georgetown structure to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building was erected in 1842 and is known locally as the Town Clock because of the clock faces located on all four sides of its bell tower. The tower was added around 1845.

A visit to the Rice Museum is an excellent start of a tour of Historic Georgetown.
