Big Stone City lies on US 12, right on the Minnesota border in Grant County near Milbank in the Glacial Lakes & Prairies Region on the bank of the North Fork of the Whetstone river. A community of approximately 300 families, Big Stone City is home to Big Stone Lake, the lowest point in South Dakota. (966 ft. above sea level). It is also on the Yellowstone Trail, the first cross-country road, which was begun in South Dakota.
