The date January 13, 1902 is an important one for the people of Vermillion. On that day about 100 people met at the Masonic Hall to organize a club with the purpose of establishing a public library. Funds in the sum of $10,000 were appropriated by Andrew Carnegie in 1903 and the building began to materialize. Since then, the library has been supported by the city with contributions from the county. A new library building was built beside the old one in 1978.

The library has available three Apple computers for in-house use. Over 100 software packages and a printer are also available to the users.

The library maintains special collections of books and magazines in the following subject areas: South Dakota History and Culture; Large Print Materials; Science Fiction; Fantasy; Horror; Mysteries; Westerns; Historical Fiction; and Oversized Books.
