In Black Hills, Badlands & Lakes Region, Philip is located in Haakon County (of which it is the county seat) east of Rapid City on US 14 and Hwy 73 on the banks of the Bad River and its north fork near Buffalo Gap National Grassland. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 933, a decrease of 144 since 1990.
