Waubay is a Sioux word meaning "a nesting place for birds." The Waubay National Wildlife Refuge contains 4649 acres of lakes, marshes, woodlands and grasslands. The refuge is home to many species of birds and animals. The Headquarters Visitor Center displays wildlife and history exhibits, and the 3/4-mile Loop Hiking Trail passes a 110-foot observation tower with views of the lakes, as well as a small wetland area. A short Spring Lake Overlook Trail offers panoramic views of four various habitats. Other recreational facilities include a picnic area, wildlife observation, and hunting and fishing. The refuge is open daily.
