Known in ancient times as Alclyde, Dumbarton is the a seaport and the county town of
Dumbartonshire. It is situated on the Leven near its confluence with the
Clyde, and is 16 miles NW of
Glasgow. It is one of the oldest Scottish towns. Its castle is a fortress at least 1000 years old and is built on an isolated, double-peaked basaltic rock 250 feet high, known as the "Gibraltar of the Clyde."
As Alclyde, the town was the capital of the kingdom of Strathclyde and later of Levanax, or Lennox.
