Covering a thousand acres on the south shore of Lake Meredith, Albibates National Monument is 34 miles northeast of
Amarillo off Hwy 137. The land is rich in flint, which occurs in a variety of colors and was used for toolmaking and barter by prehistoric cultures as long as 12,000 years ago. Many ancient implements have been discovered throughout the Southwest and Great Plains that have been traced back to the area around the monument.
A one-mile ranger-guided walking tour goes through a flint quarry and includes a flint-chipping demonstration.
