Athens, is located 35 miles west of Tyler on Hwys 19 and 31 and US 175 at the center of Henderson County, of which it is the county seat. Lake Athens is nearby.

The now diversified economy supported 10,967 people in 1990, up from 4,765 in 1940.

The Old Fiddlers Reunion in May and the Black-Eyed Pea Jamboree in July attract crowds of visitors.
