Established in 1855 by the 1st U.S. Cavalry; the rectangle around the parade ground was the site of 25 buildings which housed two companies. Troopers on mules protected wagon trains on the San Antonio-El Paso 'lower road'. Abandoned in 1861. Modern visitor and interpretive center open daily. 33 miles W.
