The seat of Gonzales County, Gonzales is located east of San Antonio and south of I-10 on US 90, 93, and 183 at the confluence of the Guadalupe River and the San Marcos river. In 1990 the population was 6,527. The Gonzales Museum, established in 1936, houses a collection of historical artifacts and weapons. The Eggleston House, a restored dog-trot cabin maintained by the town, is perhaps the finest example of its type. Special events include the annual Come-and-Take-It-Days, which observes the Gonzales legacy as the "Lexington of Texas."
