The monument, near the high school campus, recalls Civil War hostilities that wracked the nation. The predominantly German settlers of Comfort were openly sympathetic to the Union cause. Friction developed with Confederate troops. A battle took place in which 19 settlers were killed and nine wounded. The nine wounded were executed a few hours later as traitors. The monument commemorates the Unionists killed in this tragic episode.
