This US Military post was established in 1849. As the line jof settlement moved westward, the need for the fort was less and troops were withdrawn in 1853. The orginal location lies in the lake bed of Lake Whitney. When the lake was built, much of the ruins and rock were transported to a new site and used in the reconstruction. One-room rock buildings house memntos of early days of Whitney and other artifacts.
