This is an example of a successful urban-renewed project. Once lined with ramshackle houses, the river now is a prime attraction a few steps below the business district. The riverwalk provides a pleasent stroll during the day, when craft shops and galleries are open and sidewalk terraces teem with diners. The tree-lined foorpaths, romantically lighted at night, follow landscaped river banks bordered by nightsopts, restaurants and handicraft shops. Boat tours and dining cruises of the river are available; many ticket outlets exist along the water. The river is drained for cleaning during the first week in January; most shops remain open. To confirm the exact cleaning dates contact the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau.
