Laid out in 1836 by Sam
Houston and Philip Sublett, its name changed to Sabine in 1839. At one time its population soared to 6,000, but storms in 1886, 1900 and 1915 took their toll. Historically significant battle took place here in the Civil War. City was annexed by
Port Arthur in 1978.
