Laid out in 1836 by Sam Houston and Philip Sublett, its name changed to Sabine in 1839. At one time its population soared to 6,000, but storms in 1886, 1900 and 1915 took their toll. Historically significant battle took place here in the Civil War. City was annexed by Port Arthur in 1978.

The carnival provides three days of fun for children and adults. Cracklin Festival Port Barre LA November8 This festival is held in November in Port Barre. Four days of fun include family entertainment, Cajun and Country music, food, cooking contests, arts and crafts, and a parade. Houston Hot Sauce Festival Houston TX September21-22 The Houston Hot Sauce Festival, conducted in September, showcases everything from sauce, salsa and spices to jams, jellies and pickles. The festival also features cooking demonstrations and on stage entertainment.
