San Juan is located just east of McAllen toward Weslaco along BR 83S near the Rio Grande River and the United States/Mexico border. In Hidalgo County, it was incorporated in 1973. In 1992 San Juan reported a population of 10,815. Its economy is based primarily on agriculture and commerce; visitors to the Virgen de San Juan del Valle Shrine are also important to the community.
